South Walton State Parks and Coastal Dune Lakes Along Scenic 30A

Scenic Highway 30A is the spine of South Walton’s beach neighborhoods—Visit South Walton counts 16 distinct beach neighborhoods from Miramar Beach to Inlet Beach. This guide focuses on three Florida State Parks that sit on or beside that corridor and on the rare coastal dune lakes that make the stretch different from a generic Destin day trip.

Why dune lakes matter on 30A

Florida State Parks notes that coastal dune lakes are extremely rare worldwide and, in the United States, occur only along the Gulf Coast. Deer Lake State Park is literally named for the dune lake inside its boundaries. Topsail Hill Preserve State Park explains that its white quartz dunes help create a freshwater dune-lake ecosystem that supports aquatic wildlife and imperiled species such as the Choctawhatchee beach mouse.

For visitors based in Santa Rosa Beach, Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, or Rosemary Beach, these parks are not a side trip “somewhere else”—they are the public land stitched directly into the 30A experience.

Topsail Hill Preserve State Park (Santa Rosa Beach)

Address: 7525 W. County Highway 30A, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459
Hours: 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year
Entrance fee (vehicle): $6 per vehicle (see Florida State Parks for the full fee schedule)
Phone: 850-267-8330

Topsail Hill is named for dunes that rise like a ship’s sails above soft sand and the Gulf. The park states it offers about 3 miles of pristine beaches, plus hiking through old-growth pine, scrub, dunes, and wetlands. Camping and lodging options listed by the park include tent sites, RV sites, and cabins—check current reservation availability on the Florida State Parks site.

Current access note (verified on the park page): Effective Sept. 16, 2026, the main beach access boardwalk is temporarily closed for construction. Florida State Parks asks visitors to use the designated beach access path next to the tram station instead. Construction related to a new Nature Walk and Visitor Center has also relocated the tram stop and temporary restrooms.

Grayton Beach State Park (Santa Rosa Beach)

Address: 357 Main Park Road, Santa Rosa Beach, FL 32459
Hours: 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year
Entrance fee (vehicle): $5 per vehicle
Phone: 850-267-8300

Grayton Beach State Park covers nearly 2,000 acres. Beyond the Gulf beach, Western Lake supports fishing and paddling, and the park lists about 4 miles of trails through coastal forest. Overnight visitors can reserve cabins or campground sites through Florida State Parks.

Capacity note: The park warns that during high visitation it may temporarily close to day visitors (including pedestrians and bicyclists) for several hours at a time. Campers with reservations are still admitted during those closures. If you are day-tripping from Seaside, WaterColor, or Blue Mountain Beach, have a backup beach access in mind.

Deer Lake State Park (east 30A)

Address: 6350 E. County Road 30-A, Santa Rosa, FL 32459
Hours: 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year
Fees: Honor box with correct change required — $3 per vehicle (2 to 8 passengers); $2 for pedestrians, bicyclists, or extra passengers
Phone: 850-267-8300

Deer Lake is the quieter, dune-lake-forward stop on the eastern side of the corridor. A boardwalk across the dunes provides beach access for picnicking, swimming, and fishing, and the park highlights rare plants such as Gulf coast lupine, spoonflower, pitcher plants, and Curtiss’ sandgrass. Like Grayton, Deer Lake may temporarily close to day visitors when it reaches capacity.

How to use this trio on a South Walton itinerary

  • Western 30A / Santa Rosa Beach base: Start at Topsail for tram-accessible dune and beach time (watch the boardwalk construction notice), then continue toward Grayton for Western Lake paddling or a trail loop.
  • Central arts towns (Grayton, WaterColor, Seaside): Grayton Beach State Park is the closest full-service park; arrive early on peak weekends because of capacity closures.
  • Eastern 30A toward Seacrest / Alys / Rosemary / Inlet: Deer Lake is the nearest state-park boardwalk-and-dune-lake stop without committing to a Destin-side park day.

Neighborhood context (no guesswork)

Visit South Walton’s neighborhood directory lists these 16 beach communities along the county’s Gulf edge: Miramar Beach, Seascape, Sandestin, Dune Allen, Gulf Place, Santa Rosa Beach, Blue Mountain Beach, Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove, WaterSound, Seacrest, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, and Inlet Beach. State-park days pair naturally with those town centers—just do not invent parking rules or “secret” accesses; use published park fees and Visit South Walton’s beach-and-bay access directory when you need a non-park walkover.
